Trinity Mirror's Sunday titles still exploit the market gap

Sunday tabloids are still seeing a huge year on year circulation increase on the back of The News of the World's demise (Marketing Week).
The bounce for these titles is showing no sign of tailing off, although they are seeing small month on month dips.
Trinity Mirror's Sunday Mirror is up 37.68% year on year for the six months May to October, with an average net circulation for October of 1,773,627, putting on some 700,000 copies since the axing of the News of the World. Sister title The People is up 35% for the period to 804,126 for October.

The owners of the Daily Mail and Daily Express are said to have discussed a potential merger of the titles.
Lord Rothermere, chairman of the Daily Mail and General Trust, and Richard Desmond, chairman of Northern and Shell, are said to have met earlier this year and are planning further talks, according to a Daily Telegraph report.
A merger could create a title with a combined circulation of more than 3 million. The deal would also mark the end of hostility between the two papers, which for years engaged in mudslinging on their front pages. Read more...

UK CORPORATES have offered strong support for last week's Budget.
A post-Budget survey from Barclays Corporate show 88% stating that the business- related measures outlined by the Chancellor will have a positive impact on private sector growth, while more than three quarters of respondents believe the Government now offers a clear plan around generating this growth.
In the survey of more than 400 senior executives of companies with turnover above £5m across the UK, the findings also revealed 57% of corporates believe the Budget will make the UK more competitive internationally. Read more...

A MULTI-MILLION-POUND vision to transform Cardiff into one of the UK's powerhouse financial cities has been revealed.
Cardiff Council and the Assembly Government have today committed a combined £60m for a new Central Business District in the heart of the city.
The CBD will create 4m sq ft of new top-grade office space on land stretching about 140 acres from Cardiff Bus Station, past the Callaghan Square office development and into Cardiff Bay.

BUSINESS confidence has improved markedly as a result of Wednesday's budget, a survey of company directors revealed today.

In another fantastic month, January 2011 stats showed WalesOnline recorded 1,005,826 unique users. That's 11.1% up on January 2010.
It's the second time in three months our website has hit the 1m unique user target (including jobs and blogs) - November also broke the 1m barrier.
We've seen success with our new pan-Wales town map on the home page, a redesigned Six Nations section, strong news stories and traffic-driving pictures.
It's a great achievement for everyone involved - the digital crew, the multimedia newsroom and the wider team.
So now we're looking to push on with a bigger and better business section, more reader involvement and - not forgetting - a brand new editor, Alison Gow!

Metro aims to be entertainment market leader

Metro, the free national morning newspaper, is to ramp up its entertainment section, both online and in print, in a bid to become “a leader” in UK showbiz coverage.
The paper will make gradual changes to the layout and content of its “guilty pleasures” entertainment pages from the end of March and will focus on using social media and user generated content to help increase the numbers reading its entertainment sections. Read more...
BBC to cut online budget by 25%

The BBC is to cut about 200 websites as it reduces the amount of money it spends on its online output.
The changes, which will see BBC Online's budget cut by £34m, will also result in the loss of up to 360 posts over the next two years.
Among the sites to close include teen services Switch and Blast and community site 606. The plans are part of the BBC's cost-cutting measures to make 20% savings as a result of the licence fee settlement. Read more...

Print and outdoor are the most efficient media for FMCG (Fast Moving Consumer Goods) advertisers, according to research from Clear Channel Outdoor and Brand Science, the Omnicom Media Group research division.
Last week Sally Dickerson, global director at Brand Science, presented the most recent econometrics research at Clear Channel Outdoor's Ideas Seminar to more than 150 planners and buyers from agencies and specialists.
Print generates £1.47 incremental sales revenue for each £1 of media and production costs for FMCG advertisers. Outdoor media generates £1.09, radio 89p, TV 80p and online 66p.
For FMCG advertisers, the return on investment for outdoor increases as outdoor's share increases. If outdoor takes an above median share of spend it generates incremental sales of £1.33 compared with just 30p for a below median share.
Print is also the most efficient medium for telecoms advertisers, delivering incremental sales of £11.31 for each £1 of media and production cost. Outdoor is the second most efficient delivering a return of £6.53. Read more...
