Job cuts in service sector as economy hits the buffers

A FALL in new orders has seen growth in the Welsh private sector grind to a halt, according to new research published today.

The latest Lloyds TSB Wales Business Activity Index - which measures the combined output of the economy's manufacturing and service sectors - show a level of 50 in May, down from 51.5 in April. Call centre firm to create 600 jobs in Cardiff

A CALL CENTRE company, whose clients include Shop Direct Group, is creating 600 jobs in Cardiff. Global services company Serco said the jobs are being created through its expanding subsidiary the Listening Company, which it acquired in March.

The positive jobs announcement followed Thursday's decision by Lloyds Banking Group to close its online banking call centre at Bridgend, where it employs 700. Lloyds said that up to 650 staff would be offered jobs at its call centres in Cardiff, Newport and Swansea when the operation closes next March. Read More...

 

Service sector growth fall signals sluggish economic recovery

GROWTH in the powerhouse services sector slowed in April as companies increased their prices at the fastest rate for two-and-a-half years.

Jobs threat at Focus DIY

NEARLY 4,000 staff at Focus DIY faced an uncertain future today after the struggling retail chain said it plans to put itself into administration.

The private equity-owned firm has asked Ernst & Young to act as administrator, saying it had no alternative after it defaulted on a credit facility.

ACT to create 100 jobs in £19m year-long contract

WORK-BASED learning provider ACT is creating 100 new jobs after securing a new £19m contract with the Welsh Assembly Government.

In line with Assembly Government priorities, the bulk of the training will focus on jobless and low-skilled youngsters who will benefit from the new traineeships programme, designed to give them the core skills needed to compete for work.

Manufacturing rises at its fastest rate for 16 years

UK manufacturing grew in January at its fastest annual rate in 16 years, official figures have revealed, adding to evidence that the economy bounced back from a dismal end to last year.

Manufacturing output rose 6.8% in January, compared to the same month a year ago, and was 1% higher than in December, its fastest rate of growth in 10 months, the Office for National Statistics said.

The surge was led by electrical and transport equipment industries and followed positive trade figures which showed a boost to UK exports in January. Read more...
