Motoring costs soar above inflation

The cost of owning a car has risen by more than £800 a year over the past 12 months, a study has found.

Drivers have been hit by soaring fuel prices, a rapid rise in the cost of insurance, higher garage fees and the fall in cars’ resale value.

Saab announces second Chinese investment partner

June 13th, 2011

Saab owner Spyker cars says it has reached agreement with two Chinese firms to invest a total of 245m euros (£214m, $350m) in the firm. The car maker has been forced to stop production in Sweden because of financial difficulties. Under the non-binding deal, Zhejian Youngman Lotus Automobile would invest 136m euros for a 29.9% stake in Spyker.

Pang Da Automobile would increase its investment to 109m euros, retaining its previously agreed 24% stake. The three firms have agreed a manufacturing and distribution agreement to allow Saab to expand its presence in China. Read More...

 

BMW pumps more cash into UK

GERMAN giant BMW has announced a massive new investment in its British factories and has confirmed that its next generation MINI models will be built in the UK.

Over the next three years, the company plans to pump an additional £500 million into its British production facilities taking BMW's total investment across all its UK operations to more than £1.5 billion since 2000. Read More...

 

Hyundai readies biggest ever online campaign

Hyundai will launch its biggest ever online-only launch campaign later this year for its Veloster coupe model.

End of road for annual MoTs: Tests could be less frequent to reduce costs

Ministers are considering lifting the requirement that cars have an annual MoT test, despite warnings that it could lead to dozens more deaths on the roads.

Under new plans, drivers may be required to get their vehicles checked only once every two years.

Transport Secretary Philip Hammond said the proposal, which would save motorists hundreds of pounds at a time of high petrol prices, was sensible because modern-day cars were a lot safer. Read more...

Manufacturing rises at its fastest rate for 16 years

UK manufacturing grew in January at its fastest annual rate in 16 years, official figures have revealed, adding to evidence that the economy bounced back from a dismal end to last year.

Manufacturing output rose 6.8% in January, compared to the same month a year ago, and was 1% higher than in December, its fastest rate of growth in 10 months, the Office for National Statistics said.

The surge was led by electrical and transport equipment industries and followed positive trade figures which showed a boost to UK exports in January. Read more... 

 

Rolls Royce and Daimler bid £2.75bn for engine maker

ROLLS-ROYCE and Daimler yesterday unveiled a takeover offer of £2.75bn for a leading maker of industrial diesel engines.

In what would be one of the biggest deals in its history, Rolls plans to combine Germany’s Tognum with its own Bergen business, which makes engines used across the maritime and power generation sectors.

Car giant Daimler already owns 28.4% of Tognum, which is best known as a supplier of engines for ships and trains through its MTU subsidiary. Read more... 

 

Ambassador promises to entice more US business to Wales

WALES has enormous potential in attracting US investment in the economy, the country’s Ambassador to the UK said yesterday – as he offered to personally encourage companies to make a base here.

Louis Susman said he had been “very impressed” with Wales’ trade potential.

The 73-year-old investment banker and donor to the Democratic Party was at the National Assembly yesterday to meet with First Minister Carwyn Jones.

He said that $200bn of trade, services and products currently go back and forth between Wales and the US. Read More... 

 

Toyota beats GM to end 2010 as world's biggest carmaker

Toyota ended 2010 as the world's largest carmaker despite suffering a series of recalls and safety issues.

The Japanese company's sales reached 8.42 million vehicles, just beating General Motors' tally of 8.39 million.

Toyota's sales, including truckmaker Hino and carmaker Daihatsu, rose 8% from 2009 due to strong growth in China and other Asian countries.

Toyota dethroned its US rival as the world's biggest carmaker in 2008 - a position GM held for nearly 80 years.

But the company says it is targeting profits and quality rather than volume. Read more...
